More and more Americans, when asked to state their religious affiliation, answer “no religion.” Many of these Americans serve in the military. Chaplains are recruited in the military of various faiths to serve the spiritual needs of military personnel. Today there is a call for Atheist or Humanist chaplains to serve the needs of people who do not believe in God and who are unaffiliated with any religion. What sort of obligations do the Armed Forces have to provide religious services for military personnel? Should this include atheists and humanists? Given that the military is a federal organization, what reasons might they have for addressing the spiritual and emotional needs of some soldiers but not others?

America has prevented religion from interfering with its state affairs but it has given the freedom to its citizens to follow whichever religion they like to follow. Today, number of people who actively follow religion are very less due to the scientific advancements that proved most of the religious arguments invalid and as myths. This is also true with people who serve in the Military as it consists of people with religious faith and those who don’t. Most of the people who serve in the military undergo huge stress and episodes of trauma due to the battleground. People find strength in different entities such as God, religion, family, friends and counselors. So, it becomes very important for the officers in the military to make enough spiritual available for those who find solace in religion and for others who do not believe in religion should be given an opportunity to interact with counselors and get out of their stress. Both the spiritual and humanistic approach help in motivating and maintaining the strength of the soldiers.
