race and gender present two broad social categories into which we may categorise individuals based on certain characteristic behaviours and beliefs. Such associations can be created using different learning paradigms. Thus it is difficult to make a case of the involvement of only a single factor in determining our conceptulaistaion of race and gender. In reality, there may be an interplay of classical and operant conditioning, observational learning as well as acquiring associations based on media projections. Thus for instance, news channels may often exaggerate the role of the racial identity of a criminal in its reports which may influence the formation of negative attitudes about people of that race as the majority viewer’s may associate a neutral stimulus of racial identity with higher instance of crime and thus form stereotypes about all the members of a racial group as criminals. Moroever, the vicarious observation of violence and aggression on television may reinforce the prevailing gender stereotypes about women as physically weaker and more vulnerable compared to men who may be typically represented as physically stronger and powerful. Observation of such gender differences may likely influence the young members of society at the crucial age of learning about their world and they come to form associations about masculine and feminine traits based on the observation of gender based division of work at home and in the larger society.

thus, it emerges that all these factors work simultaneously to influence the social learning of race and gender.
