Explanation / Answer

5. In a broken hip the pelvis is not fractured. The bone that is fractured in a broken hip is the Femur. The upper part of the femur is more likely to be fractured in a broken hip.

The hip is formed when the Femur bone meets the three bones of the pelvis namely Ilium, Pubic Bone and the Ischium. These three bones form the Acetabulum which is a socket on the pelvis(outer part).

The hip bone contains onlya single bone that is the femur with no additional bones to protect it. Whereas the pelvis has three bones which converge to form a socket Acetabulum. This provides additional protection to the pelvis and the chances of fracturing the pelvis is lower than that of the hip bone.
