Question

3. Name the vessels (in the correct sequence) that O, travels in during transport 4. Describe what happens to oxygen during internal respiration. Which structures does it cross? 5. What happens to O2 during cellular respiration? What is produced? 6. What is the relationship between CO; and cellular respiration? 7. Describe what happens to CO2 during internal respiration. Which structures does it cross? 8. Name the vessels (in the correct sequence) that CO2 travels in during transport. 9. Describe what happens to CO; during external respiration. Which structures does it cross? 10. What is the pathway of CO2 in ventilation? How is it different from the pathway that oxygen takes? 11. How is transport different for oxygen and CO2? 12. What is the overall purpose of breathing?

Explanation / Answer

3. O2 enters into lungs and reaches arteries, from there to arteriole and then to capillary and then to venule and finally to vein.

4. During internal respiration, O2 diffuses out of blood. It crosses lungs and then CO2 is released at tissues.

5. Cells in body combines with glucose and oxygen and forms ATP and CO2. Cellular respiration starts glycolysis where glucose enters cells and is converted to pyruvate which makes ATP amd NADH.

6. Generally photosynthesis makes the glucose used in cellular respiration to make ATP. The glucose is then turned to CO2 which is used in photosynthesis and water is broken to form oxygen during photosynthesis. In cellular respiration, oxygen is combined with hydrogen to form water.

7. During internal respiration CO2 diffuses out of cells. It occurs in metabolizing tissues.

8. CO2 travels from vein to venule and then to capillary, then to arteriole and finally reaches artery.

9. During external respiration, CO2 diffuses into alveolar air. It occurs in lungs.
