Ans) BMI is Body mass index which is a measure of body fat and used to determine fat in body by individuals weight and height. This calculation is done using BMI calculator and is helpful for the healthcare practitioner to determine overall fitness of an individual and the concerned chronic disease prevailing.
BMI is calculated by the formula of weight in kg/height in meter squares.
BMI calculated for teenagers and kids is age and sex specific and is referred to as BMI-for-age. With above given information about child's age , sex , date of birth, date of measurement, height and weight the BMI calculator of CDC( center for disease control and prevention) , the results obtained are as follows. The age of the girl child according to the calculator comes out as 11years 9months.
a) Child's BMI calculated by entering the information comes out to be 23.1
b) BMI for age percentile is the measure and calculation of one's BMI according to the comparision of weight to that of children of the same age and sex. Thus the calculation of BMI in children is same as adults but is interpreted in a different manner , using age percentile. BMI for age percentile is done on an age growth chart provided by Center for disease control and prevention. The BMI of 23.1 comes out to be at 91st percentile in the age growth chart of child.
c) With the information provided and the BMI calculation according to age percentile the child comes out to be overweight. This is not an obese child but overweight which could be prevented.
d) As a healthcare practitioner I would suggest that being the child overweight , the condition is however not an obese and thus could be controlled and prevented further , definitely the child should not be prescribed to do dieting for weight control. This is the age of puberty and certain other factors are also responsible for weight gain which could be examined by doing some lab tests also. However diet plays a significant role in managing weight , and a healthy eating habit should be encouraged to the child and parents for weight control.
. Including lots of green leafy vegetables and fruits in diet.
. Avoid drinking sugary beverages including diet drinks , instead drinking water should be encouraged.
. Avoid processed and fast food for child, rather homemade healthy food should be included in diet.
. Encouraging physical activities including playing sports alongwith other daily activities to imp[rove overall health, instead of using gadgets.
. Taking adequate sleep at night at least 7to8 hours and discourage late night sleeping habit.
Overall a self motivated approach should be done by the child for a healthy , stressfree life and therefore managing weight.
e) BMI though calculated is an indicator of high body fatness , but it is not considered as the only researched tool for assessment of weight or fat gain. BMI is considered as an alternative for measuring direct fat, however there are other methods to indicate poor health with increasing fat in body like Bioelectrical impedence , skinfold thickness measurements , densitometry( underwater weighing). BMI is an inexpensive and easy to indicate method for measuring body fat and considering status of poor health which could be prevented. BMI is considered as the primary factor for body fat indicator as it requires only weight and height to measure and other body measures are not considered hence it does not give accuracy of the body fat deposition unlike other methods like skinfold thickness measurement , electronic scanner , caliper methods. These methods uses equipments for measuring body fat and hence result is near to provide accurate results, but BMI is not an accuracy calculator it only reveals the occurrence of fat in body.Hence BMi is an indicator and not a clinical or medical guidance substitute for healthcare practitioners to consider.
