Question

C-4 plants that live in arid environments close their stomates during the day in order to prevent water loss. This means that the dark reactions are different because
a. CO2 concentrations inside the leaves of the plant become toxic for the plant because they cannot escape
b. CO2 concentrations inside the leaves of the plant become low because they can't enter through the stomates
c.. Light cannot reach the thylakoids efficiently
d. .The oxygen generated as a by-product of the light reactions cannot escape and becomes toxic for the plant
e. Water is so scarce that photosynthesis cannot run properly unless it uses an alternate method.

Explanation / Answer

b. . CO2 concentrations inside the leaves of the plant become low because they can't enter through the stomates

C-4 plants that live in arid environments are also called CAM plants . They follows Crassulacean acid metabolism(CAM) where they close their stomates during the day in order to prevent water loss and open it at night. Here other than the mesophyll cells and bundle sheath cells, the vacuole is involved where the malic acid is stored during night time. During day time this malate makes the CO2 available for Calvin cycle to occur in bundle sheath to form starch. Thus only the stored CO2 is the source.
