Question

2. Please answer the following

a. You are contacted by a fitness club to review the test it uses to evaluate cardiorespiratory fitness in middle-aged participants. The club requires the participants to perform the 1.5 mile run test during their first exercise session. The club director says he uses this test because, over the past decade, he has developed a good database to track clients. What is your reaction?

b. You conduct the 1 mile walk test with a 45-year-old male client and record the following information: Time = 15 minutes, Heart rate = 140 beats/minute, Weight = 170 pounds (77.1 kg). Calculate and evaluate his estimated VO2max.

c. A 50-year-old male weighing 180 pounds (81.7 kg) completes a submaximal GXT on a cycle ergometer and the following data are obtained: HR = 100 bpm at workload 300 kgm/min, HR =110 bpm at workload 450 kgm/min, HR = 125 bpm at workload 600 kgm/min, and HR = 140 bpm at workload 750 kgm/min. Estimate the subject's VO2max using the extrapolation procedure. Express the value in METs.

Explanation / Answer

A.Since its a ten year database,it would be wise to the data as it would give new insights on fitness of middle aged people.

B.Given age- 45, time- 15 min, HR - 140 beat/min, weight -170 pounds(77.1kg)

using the formula -

VO2max = 132.853 - (0.0769 * weight in lb) - (0.3877 * age) + (6.315 * gender) - (3.2649 * walk time in minutes) - (0.156 * heart rate) gender value: male=1 and female=0

=132.853-13.073-17.4465+6.315-48.9735-21.84 = 37.835 mL/kg/min

The estimated Vomax is 37.835 mL/kg/min and the range with +/- 5 error is 32.835 to 42.835 mL/kg/min
