Explanation / Answer

Homeostasis is a self regulating process by which body maintains a constant internal environment, with rigidly controlled limits. for example, temperature of the body is maintained costant at 370 c by the process of homeostasis, similarly blood glucose level, water content, acid base regulation, electrolytic balance, osmotic pressure, carbon di oxide levels are all maintained at optimum level with help of homeostasis.

Maintenence of the body condition is very important, because in the wrong body conition certain process will not function properly leading to disastrous consquences. For example, if the body's temperature is not maintained at 37 degrees, in case the temperature goes high the enzymes will not work efficently causing immense damage to the body.

Homeostasis can occur through negative feedback mechanism or positive feed back mechanism.

Negative feedback mechanism : Negative feed back is reaction that causes decrease in function in response to a stimulus. For example, if blood glucose level increases, this is detected by the brain which stimulates pancreas to release the hormone insulin, which keeps the blood sugar level at normal levels by either converting glucose to energy or helps in converting sugar into glycogen.Thermo regulation of body temperature is also an example of negative feedback

Positive feedback mechanism: Positive feedback is a response to change from the normal condition that increases the departure even more.In positive feedback the output enhances the original stimulus. For example, During child labor a hormone called oxytocin is released, which causes uterine contractions and thereby facilitate dilation in labor. Blood clotting is also an example of positive feedback, when a part of the body is injured it releases platelets, an activated platelets releases more platelets, which group together to form clots which stops bleeding
