Question
A 30 year old female visits you for counseling--you're in your first year of full-time work as a therapist and have a supervisor that you consult with each week. The client tells you that his last therapist has recently retired and moved to Florida. The client reports that he has had periods of depression and relationship instability since he was a teenager. His work with his last therapist has led him to believe that he may have been sexually abused by his parish priest when he was 8 or 9--the client has vague memories of being uncomfortable around the priest when he served as an altar boy and currently does not go to church because priests "make him nervous." In addition to this, the client has recently read in the local newspaper that the priest (now in his 80s) has been accused of sexually abusing other boys in the parish and is under investigation. The man tells you that he has read several books that describe that he can uncover or clarify his vague memories through hypnotic regression: He wants you to hypnotize him in order to recover his possible memories of abuse. What actions would you take in this case and what concerns do you have? Explanation / Answer
Hello!
Given that my client thinks he has been abused and since I'm new I would definitely try getting in touch with my supervisor once and discuss the case before starting the sessions , I can however , try convincing him that he needs to try and get out of this feeling of being afraid of the priests and also I want him to know that thinking too much about the past is affecting his new life and his relationship however my concerns are that regression is not a good idea and I have a reason for saying this because he only has vague memories of the past and this has affected him enough and now to know about it in detail can have some more possible effects on him which is not advisable instead he needs to try and get out of this feeling and start fresh and also about his old therapist I do not have a clear cut information and do not know how to perceive the situation and through his concerns it tells me that he is not quiet willing to.let go of the memory instead he wants to know more which personally is not suggestable or atleast I wouldn't do it.
moreover I need to do my reaserach and background checking to start with the treatment or even to suggest anything I can only then come to a conclusion.
Thankyou, hope this helped
