The Social Mirror

Purpose: To identify how others perceptions and views have affected and shaped our personalities, identities and self-image.

What beliefs to you have about yourself that limit you?

How might these beliefs have been created or influenced by your social mirror?

Since it is possible – perhaps even likely – that these weaknesses or limitations are more imagined than real, what could you do to turn them into strengths?

Who could help you make these changes or give you feedback about your progress?

Explanation / Answer

The social mirror means the way we see ourself by taking into consideration current social paradigms and perceptions of the people around us. Basically the SMT states that people tend to take into consideration others' or their peers' perceptions/opinions which can make them incapable of self reflection. When this happens, they get too caught up with how others see and think of them.

The best example to descibe this would be our almost daily quest to achieve the 'ideal beauty' or to abide by certain beauty standards , again, as prescribed by the society. (media, people around us etc. ). People are willing to undergo nasty procedures, surgeries, drastic weightloss/weightgain programs in order to change their appearance, bodies. This somehow, also highlights another important implication-self image. Self image refers to how you see yourself. In this case, it pinpoints the low or poor self image of the image of the individual which drives him/her to fall into this trap.

We, as individuals need to be more accepting of our imperfections and flaws. This leads to higher self esteem and better self image, which makes us less likely to get influenced by our social mirror. Playing our strengths and working on our weaknesses will make us more confident and comfortable in our skin. An unbiased person, who could your mentor, friend, sibling or even a parent can provide us with the feedback about our progress.
