peer rewiev please
I tend to lean towards the activation-synthesis theory because it make a little bit more sense. However, our textbook state "Psychologists are still not sure what causes us to dream". This makes it very difficult to make a strong argument for either theory. It would be a boring and an edifying post if I left it at that so I will propose my own hypothesis that the cause for dreaming is possibly a way of processing information that can not be processed while conscious. This could be the reason that when dealing with stress sleeping can help calm you down.
Explanation / Answer
I think sometimes dreams can be the cause of unexpressed desires wishes as Freud says. But it is mix, many times we dream about something weird, that is not in our secret wish list also. Sometimes we dream to declutter since we are bombarded with so much of info in our day to day lives. Hence we may dream to cope with trauma or problems
I also believe that dreams are rando and meaningless.. though this makes it boring but this is a real fact.Hobson's more recent theory attempts to reconcile this by having a neurochemcial and an emotional basis for dreaming.
As our brain can not be at absolute rest(without thinking). Our brain tends to minimize multiplethinking/tasking/functions or tends to focus at one thing during dreaming(this turns out to be the reason for dreaming)
