Question

The public’s faith and trust in police departments. In 2016 that one of the underlying causes for this potentially serious problem is that, in many police departments, success is measured by the number of arrests and deaths its officers made. When the goal is to arrest/kill more people, fewer resources are going to go toward cementing good relationships between the police and the public, which can lead to improvements in crime prevention. On the face of it, the prevention of crime would seem to be a better goal than catching the person who committed it after the fact. Which is more appropriate to you, police will adhere to their measurement systems which is arresting and killing criminals or to focus more on relationships they have with the community in catching the criminals?

Explanation / Answer

The crime rates are higher now than it was in the past, although the number of arrests and death its police officers made have increased. This means that adherence to the measurements in arresting and killing criminal is not working well in the police department.

If the relationship between the police and community is improved it can help in curbing the crime rates because it will help the police officers to know the possible underlying reasons that lead a person to commit crime.Better relationship with public can help to bring a positive change in the community by understanding the very nature and causes of crime and thus preventing a person to become a criminal by curbing or minimising the causal factors.
