My experience with negotiating to resolve the conflicts in the work place mainly include solving the dispute between the team members. The team included members of different countries, religions, genders, age and religion. There are many differences in values they possess and also exhibit different behaviors. All these factors are to be considered while resolving conflicts and the root cause for conflict needs to be identified and analyzed. I had to be extremely careful not to hurt anyone or show discrimination based on the diversity factors. All these together made resolving conflicts through negotiation an important but difficult process for me.

Successful negotiation involves the process of listening, feedback, problem solving and suggesting best solution for the conflict. Hence it requires active listening skills which require the listener to concentrate on the discussion and provide feedback whenever required. It is essential to facilitate negotiation and ensure participation. Another skill required is the ability to understand the problem by analyzing from both the party’s prospective. This is to ensure fairness and best decision making that will benefit both the parties. A successful negotiation also requires good problem solving and communication skills. All these skills are important for every business professional.

Negotiation is an important process in the workplace and it starts from the moment we get the job offer. We start negotiation through negotiating for better salary and then it continues throughout the work life. We may negotiate for better positions, salary increments and in case of conflict with the team members or other members in the organization. Organizations negotiate with vendors or suppliers to ensure benefit in dealings and avoid conflicts.
