Question
Briefly describe one reason why the prefrontal cortex is particularly suited for implementing executive processes and elaborate on how this relates to the difficulties caused to Phineas Gage. Aim for analysis here, not summarizing what is noted below. Please write 200-250 words and use at least one in-text citation and the full reference.
Make sure to employ APA structure and format. Your paper should include a title page, in-text and reference citations, and a Reference page. If you have any questions on how to cite, please see the following resource:
Explanation / Answer
Briefly describe one reason why the prefrontal cortex is particularly suited for implementing executive processes and elaborate on how this relates to the difficulties caused to Phineas Gage.
Phineas Gage was one of the American railroad construction workers who was had been known for his much astonishing survival after one of the iron rods had been completely driven from the left frontal lobe of the brain and these injuries had severe impacts on his behaviour as well as personality, which completely changed him over the 12 years of his remaining life. The nature of changes that occurred in the body of gage, along with their intensity and the duration has been something that could put have been clearly identified. Phineas Gage was retarded very highly amongst his employers and they appreciated his hard work and dedication , but after the incident had occurred, there had been such drastic changes in his personality that his employers could not give him his place back in the company. There seemed to be a destruction of his of his equilibrium balance of any of the intellectual faculties. He was said to be irrevant and involving himself in some of the “grossest profanities” didn’t seem to have patience or restraint Seemed to be stubborn, vacillating, making many future plans and abandoning them at the same time of something else seemed feasible. He was known to be well balanced earlier, whereas after the incident he was perceived as a child who didn’t have the stability and evil thoughts that a strong man would possess. So much so, that he was known as “no longer gage” by his friends. All this seemed affected due to his injury, since it was the dorsolateral pre frontal complex that seemed to have been damaged. The DLPFC, would usd various dimensions and would impart the personality , cognitive integration and behaviour that is being seen in a person. This is the area that imparts planning behaviour, organisational skills, reasoning, abstract thinking, working memory and problem solving abilities, all of which were described to be lost in Phineas Gage after his accident. This implies that the pre frontal complex is managing executive functions. The prefrontal complex is located on the Dont part of the brain, or the frontal lobe. Executive functions occur because the pfc has a high amount of connectivity with the other parts of the brain such as connections between the posterior parietal cortex, along with the various cortical as well as lambic regions, imparting executive functions.
