Explanation / Answer

IQ stands for Intelligence Quotient, a concept that was originally developed as a means of testing children who were of lower intelligence, so as to provide them with special education that was suited to their level of intelligence. Soon it was extended to all levels of intelligence, and those with superior intelligence scored higher on the IQ test as opposed to those with lower intelligene who scored lower on the test. The test is scored by comparing it to the average intelligence of the individual compared to their age group so as to understand their level and what their intelligence should be and what it actually is.

To calculate and understand the IQ Score, it is important to know what Standard Deviation (SD) means. An SD is usually in the form of a bell-shaped curve and shows us the average, and also the position of the indivuals in the sample under consideration, and what their position in the curve is compared to the average or the normal. Usually the highest point of the bell-shaped curve is where more scores are clustered as this is the average of the normal population. The scores on the two sides of the curve are fewer as they depict the extremes. It is useful in IQ Testing because it shows the position of students in teh sample, and what the deviation of each one is from the normal.

Intelligence is the ability of an individual to adapt and deal with new situations effectively, to understand and comprehend what is being said and react accordingly, the ability to judge, understand and comprehend. IT can be measured using intelligence tests
