What recommendations would you make to this athlete to help prevent gastrointestinal issues?

He’s heard about a product called Masterblaster 2000 that he can buy in a health food store for $75 for a month’s supply. That sounds like a bargain considering all its ingredients: lots of amino acids (including arginine); chromium picolinate; boron; L-carnitine; and various natural herbs including ephedra, ginseng, and smilax. The label even has a graph that shows a positive relationship between something called “anabolic effect” and months of product use. The athlete is convinced that this product must have some benefit or the superstar on the label wouldn’t endorse it and the store wouldn’t be allowed to sell it. Now he has come to you for advice about how much he should take. What would you tell him?

Most of the athletes suffer from sensitive stomach and inflammation of colon (Runner's Colitis).Runner's colitis is a term used to describe exercise induced inflammation of colon and is a temporary condition brought about by long mileage or the intensity of the run.Runners are suseptible to GI problems due to number of reasons.One of the most important reason for GI conditions is during running the large muscles of the body need to be supplied by oxygen enriched blood to fuel the working muscles. In response to this the body activates the shunting phenomena due to which most of the blood flow is diverted from the internal organs towars the working muscles.The amount of the blood flow that is being diverted correlates to the intensity of the exercise.Thus more intense the exercise more blood flow is diverted away from the GI tract.
Another important factor for this is the dehydration.Some levels of dehydration is also associated with the long run mostly in hot and humid conditions.Thus the recommendations that the athlete must follow include;
1. Hydrate well
2. Diet considerations; Some of the food products that irritate the stomach include wheat products,diary products, fibers,caffeine and artificial sweetners.These products must be avoided.
3.Meal timmings must be appropriate with the running schedule.Try taking 4-5 smaller meals rather taking 2-3 larger meals.
2. Dietary modifications for such an athelete are;
a) Creatine Monohydrate: This supplement increases the levels of creatine and phosphocreatine levels in muscles thus helps in maintaining energy levels during running and exercises.
b) Branched chain amino acids: These are highly recommended as these products especially leucine regulate protein metabolism by promoting protein synthesis and decreasing the degradation of proteins.thus repairs the damaged muscles during resistance training.
c) Citrulline Malate: Its an antifatigue supplement and it increases the rate of ATP synthesis during exercise.
