During a fight or flight reaction, sympathetic neurons of the autonomic nervous system releases the hormone norepinephrine (NE). NE acts through its receptors alpha and beta to exert their effect.
In heart, NE acts through alpha1 receptor. This results in vasoconstriction. The receptors present in the blood vessels of the smooth muscles are of beta2 type. When NE acts through beta2 receptors, vasodilation occurs.
