Question
uploaded imageIn the figure a fastidious worker pushes directly along the handle of a mop with a force F. The handle is at an angle theta = 32.68 degree with the vertical, and 0.44 and 0.34 are the coefficients of static and kinetic friction between the head of the mop and the floor. Ignore the mass of the handle and assume that all the mop's mass m = 0.60 kg is in its head. If the mop head moves along the floor with a constant velocity, then what is F? Show that if theta is less than a certain value theta 0, then F (still directed along the handle) is unable to move the mop head. Find theta 0.Explanation / Answer
When the applied force along horizontal direction is equal to frictional force then it moves uniformly.
force along horizontal = F sin 32.68° = 0.54 F
Normal force R = mg + F cos 32.68° = ( 0.6 * 9.8 ) + 0.84 F
kinetic frictional force f = u R where u = coefficient of kinetic fricion = 0.34
= 0.34 ( 5.88 +0.84 F ) = 2 + 0.286 F
according to statement , 0.54 F = 2 +0.286 F
F = 7.87 N
(b) coefficient of static friction U = 0.44
So, required angle = tan^-1( U ) = 23.75 degrees
