Question

unu te) the neutral axis ll, (6y the See -16/ An IPN 240 standard beam (see Table F-2, ndix F) is simply supported with a span length 5 m (see figure). The beam supports a concen- d load of 100 kN at 0.9 m from support B. raAt a cross section located 0.7 m from the left-hand 8. of 2.5 ort, determine the principal stresses, and ?2 and the maximum shear stress T max at each of the following loca top tions: (a) the top of the beam, (b) the of the web, and (c) the neutral axis. 100 kN IPN 240 0.9 m 2.5 m PROBLEM 8.4-16

Explanation / Answer

Reaction force at support A=100*0.9/2.5=36 kN

shear force at the section = 36 kN

bending moment at section=36*0.7=25.2 kNm

a)At top of the beam, shear stress=0

At top of beam,normal bending stress = (M/I)*d/2 =( 25.2*106)/(4250*104)*240/2=71.15 N/mm2

Therefore, pricnipal stress = 71.15 N/mm2

b)the top of the web

bending stress = 0

shear stress = Shear force/web area = 36*1000/[8.7*(240-2*13.1)]=19.35 N/mm2

Principal stress = 19.35 N/mm2

c)neutral axis

bending stress = 0

shear stress = Shear force/web area = 36*1000/[8.7*(240-2*13.1)]=19.35 N/mm2

Principal stress = 19.35 N/mm2
