Question
Specific hormones are needed in order to balance cellular activities that lead to bone growth, bone remodeling, maintenance of proper bone density, and maintenance of proper blood calcium. Select 3 hormones and describe their roles in regulating cellular functions that influence bone matrix. Include what would happen to the bones if there was a deficiency or hypersecretion of the hormone.

Select 3 hormones and describe their roles in regulating cellular functions that influence bone matrix. Include what would happen to the bones if there was a deficiency or hypersecretion of the hormone. [9 points] Hormone 1: Hormone 2: Hormone 3Explanation / Answer
Bone is made up of various cells called Osteoblasts, Osteoclasts and Osteocytes.
Osteoblasts are the structural cells of the bone, responsible for the formation of the bone.
Osteoclasts are the larger cells formed from bone marrow found on the surface of the bone which helps in the resorption of bone.
Osteocytes are the cells produced from the Osteoblasts cells.
Hormones are the chemical substances produced by the glands which are circulated in the body showing their influence on the Energy, maturation , Weight and Bone strength.
The hormones responsible for the control of calcium in the blood , Bone strength, bone remodelling are as follows,
1. Parathyroid hormone
2. Growth hormone
3. Calcitonin
Parathyroid hormone is produced from the parathyroid gland, and it regulates the level of calcium in the blood as well as the Bone remodelling and Bone metabolism. As the calcium concentration decreases the production of parathyroid hormone increases and viceversa. Parathyroid hormone a;lso stimulates the bone cells called Osteoclasts and inhibit osteoblasts.
Excessive production of parathyroid hormone is called Hyperparathyroidism and leads to bone deformation, fractures , bone loss etc.
Hypoparathyroidism is the deficiency in production of parathyroid hormone leading to extremely low levels of blood calcium, impaired muscle function and tetany.
CALCITONIN: it is produced by the cells of thyroid gland. It inactivates the osteoclasts thereby inhibiting the bone breakdown.
It helps in the maintenance of bone development and normal blood calcium levels in the body during the early stages of life.
Excessive secretion or the under secretion of the hormone do not cause any harm in the adults and it do not pose the problem in the blood calcium concentration or bone strength.
GROWTH HORMONE: it is released from the pituitary gland and it regulates the bone growth. It accelerates the bone growth by showing its effect either directlty or indirectly on the bone.
Excess secretion of the growth hormone leads to ACromegaly with increased bone mass and long bones producing a gigantic look to the person.
Deficiency of growth hormone leads to Dwarfism with decreased bone mass and bone density leading to weaker bones and osteoporosis.
