Samuel is an extraordinary leader who has both charisma and drive. He is able to demonstrate great leadership capabilities in crisis situations. He withstands adversity and has the charisma to invigorate people to support his cause. However, these same individuals also agree that Samuel can sometimes go “beyond reasonableness" by doing things such as sending emails at 3 a.m. or being so excited that his communication becomes garbled. At times, he has also had "flighty" ideas that come across as unrealistic and perhaps even lofty or pretentious. Samuel cannot be slowed down when he is like that; he believes that he is bulletproof and can do just about anything. He sometimes becomes inflexible and doesn't listen to reason. Ultimately, this behavior has resulted in some seriously erroneous decisions that have plunged his work group into the red. The board of trustees was actually considering firing him. Samuel suffers from bipolar disorder, formerly known as manic depression. This disorder affects approximately four percent of the population. It can sometimes cause those affected to have dramatic behavioral swings from a state of exhilaration to withdrawal and apathy. Bipolar disorder has been associated with individuals who show great creativity and are great in a crisis because they do not give in to adversity (for example, Winston Churchill and possibly General George Patton). However, because the behavior of people who have bipolar disorder can become extreme, they often overestimate their competence and take on more than they can handle. At the height of the manic state, they may be unable to recognize the dysfunction, which can lead to disastrous outcomes. They can go into a downward spiral, ending up in a depressed state. That has happened to Samuel. Of course, this behavior not only affects his professional life, but his personal life as well. The result is that he may not only possibly lose his job, but his loved ones as well. Clearly, Samuel is a talented administrator and loving husband and father, but his behavior is self-destructive.
Referencing the case study and your textbook readings for this week, answer the following questions and keep in mind that the psychodynamic approach considers underlying irrational processes and dynamics that govern human behavior:

The Managing trustee should not fire Samuel ,Because Samuel is a great leader and an effective administrator. It will be great loss to lose a man of such calibre. Rather the Management should try to examine what are the factors responsible for taking poor decision by Samuel. Yes, in terms of other option, Management can replace Samuel with someone who is equally capable of Samuel and ready to take the challenges. Someone close to Samuel may be his wife or any friend should take the initiate to talk with Samuel and made him aware of his disturbing behaviour. Samuel’s family members should try to make him understand that he is suffering from bipolar disorder which can be cured. Possibly his family members shall fix up an appointment with a counsellor or consulting physician and take Samuel to them for consultation. The workplace shall be made very flexible, wherein every members of the organization whom with Samuel is working shall cooperate and patient enough to tolerate him.They should understand that Samuel is not doing anything knowingly that can be detrimental. He suffers from bipolar disorder and patients like Samuel need emotional, professional support to overcome the tough situations. A coach can help in balancing abnormal behaviour. He can guide him and gives him tips about what to do and what not to do at workplaces.
