Answers to questions bellow:

Seems likely to me that children who are approached to participate in scientific studies would be largely swayed by parents. But it also seems problematic to me for a researcher to talk to a child on their own with out their parents around. As a researcher, how do you respect a child's autonomy while also navigating a parent/guardian's wishes?

How do you raise autonomous children? How do you respect a child's autonomy at home? How does that change over time? (Be mindful with this one: some of your classmates are parents and some are not.)

Why do you think we are still mostly at informed consent rather than understood consent? What kind of changes would need to happen in the system in order to shift medical and scientific fields to understood consent?

Explanation / Answer

In scientific studies that include children and young, the informed consent is taken from the parents or the caretakers. The informed consent means the parents or caretakers and the young sign the form that has all the information regarding the experiment or study, and that they agree to the study and it's procedures. It's not necessary that they have understood all the aspects of the experiment or the study to which their children are going to participate. Most of the experiments or study are carried out by the informed consent only. The writer stresses on the importance on the understood consent, which is different from informed consent, that the parents or participants are made to understand the every aspect of the research by "teach out" method and then by getting feedback about what they have taught. This ensures that they have complete understanding of the procedures and aspects of the experiment and having this understanding they give their consent to participate in the study, than mere signing it wotwith appropriate understanding of the study.
