Question:

What are the pros and cons surrounding the use of Ritalin?

Class: Adolescent Psychology (PS221)...CITE IN APA PLEASE

Explanation / Answer

Stimulant drugs such as Ritalin aim to increase the availability of the neurotransmitter dopamine, which is linked to feelings of reward and pleasure, and increase in the overall brain activity. Ritalin has been observed to lead to improved attention and a decrease in impulsive behaviour. Ritalin is inexpensive and has a long history of use. Its effects are immediately apparent so patients are not required to wait for long periods to ascertain it’s fit or dosage.

However, the use of Ritalin is associated with many short term side effects such as loss of appetite, difficulty going to sleep at night, jitteriness, lethargy and inactivity. A rebound effect often occurs for a period of time after the daily dose wears off, wherein the child’s symptoms become even more severe than usual. Another danger with the use of Ritalin is that it is highly addictive.
