tab Case Study Erik is a 15-year-old, 10th grade student at Hendersonville High School. He recently moved to Hendersonville, NC from Orlando, FL. Erik's mother brought him into your office today because she is concerned about his withdrawn, moody, and often sad affect over the past few months Erik played football when he was in Florida and was quite good at it. He was the starting quarterback for his team and enjoyed playing the sport and hanging out with his team mates after practice. Since moving to NC, Erik is no longer interested in playing football. He repeatedly tells his mom and dad that "he no longer enjoys playing" and feels like he "doesn't fit in" with the kids at school. He frequently complains about how much he misses his old school and friends At his previous school, Erik was a good student. He commonly made A/B honor roll and would occasionally help out in the tutoring center after school. However, since starting school in NC, Erik's grades have barely been at a D level. He frequently reported that he was studying or completing homework, but his grades did not support this. Erik's mother also reported that he was eating less and seemed almost angry when she asked him about his day at school. She is at a loss as to how to help him and doesn't know what is wrong. While interviewing Erik, he stated that he has difficulty waking up in the morning. At school, he can't seem to focus on the teacher or while completing his assignments. He says that there is no point in even trying out for the football team, because he knows that all the kids already on the team are better than he is, anyways. He said that he had not made any friends because the kids thought he was stupid and couldn't stand to be around someone with his level of intellect and athletic ability. You ask Erik if he had thought about getting help with his classes through the tutoring center and he replied, "What's the point? I am going to fail no matter what I do.
