Question
This week we’ll review the documentary Sicko and we’ll reflect on the central themes. In doing so, we’ll apply our knowledge of the healthcare disparity across various demographics. For our discussion, please address the following:
Go to YouTube.com and search “Sicko Michael Moore”. If you do not have access to videos, you can look this up online to read an overview.
What is a health disparity? How is the affected by our demographics (gender, race, age, income etc.)?
Have you faced (or heard of) any issues with today’s healthcare system? If so, please share your observations (within your comfort level).
In your opinion, should healthcare be free for everyone? Why/Why not?
Explanation / Answer
Thanks for posting this question, I would like to express my views on this topic since something of this kind is running in my brain since long. I read the summary.
Health disparity is the differences in the health status of different groups. It includes to partial or biased treatment given to given as per their financial status as well as nutrition consumed as per the economic background. These days a lot of people are given good health care facilities by the government, there aren't any disparities as far as gender, race, age are concerned. The difference prevails in the good health care provided to different as per the class. For eg: the govt. hospitals do not have good conditions as the private hospitals would have.
As far as India is concerned I have seen or come across the following point. The rich class would easily afford or the poor class get the benefit of the different NGOs. The middle class faces lot of burden. The heart, brain or the treatments of cancer are very costly, these days even the vaccinations as well as delivery of a woman is expensive, I think some subsidy should be given to basic necessaties such as basic vaccinations to infant, subsidy of the pensioner treatment as well their medications. All such facilities are given in UK, I have persoanlly exprienced it. India is becoming very commercial country as far hospital treatments are concerned. Many a times hospitals are ask to fill up the form which takes out information of financial status, hence people are also billed differently.
The govt should consider the above mentioned points and should lay restrictions of private hospitals.
