Some people talking about the continuity and the discontinuity theory state that people continue to grow and changes occur in people over a longer duration of time. According to this theory, development could be identified as a continuous process in which a person keeps changing depending upon the slow changes taking place in them, which are cumulative. An example of this could be explained in the manner in which children begin to learn to walk. They continue to crawl, followed by an attempt to stand at their feet, and then starting to walk. This is called a gradual change that has taken place in the form of a continuum.

On the other hand, development is thought to be consisting of a discontinuous manner. This shows that there are people who transition from one phase of life to the other and these phases of life are significantly different to form a continuum. As a result, there would be a discontinuity in some other traits of life. For example, children start to recognise objects, is continuity in thinking, but they start to imagine things in abstract forms about the same object, and this is a discontinuous thinking.

The nature as well as nurture theory attempts to explain this continuity and discontinuity in terms of gene expression. Nature statesthat the information that we receive from our parents is passed on to the offsprings these informations shape the person. On the other hand, nurture states that the environment in which a person has been brought up is the primary force that shapes the person.

If a person turns out to be exactly what the genetic information has passed on, despite of staying in a different environment, it would mean that their genetic expression have taken place in a continuum and it would support the continuity of genes expression. On the other hand, people growing up in different environments displaying characteristics of their nurture environment would be displaying a discontinuity of expression of genes.

This can also be demonstrated through the plasticity showed by the brain. The greatest example of the continuity discontinuity theory is through aging, which implies that aging is a contours process and takes place the manner in which a butterfly enfolds their wings. On the other hand, as the capacity for plasticity would be reduced or discontinued, there would be an increase in ageing.
