Explanation / Answer
Psychoanalytic theory of personality suggests that one’s personality is shaped and affected by the conflict between id, ego and superego. Id seeks pleasure while superego talks morality and ego balances both. This theory suggests that one’s personality is also affected by the suppressed feelings in the unconscious mind during one’s development. Sigmund Freud is the proponent of Psychoanalytic theory of personality.
Humanistic theory suggests that human beings keep growing and they have the ability to grow once they satisfy their basic needs. Once a need is fulfilled, they move on to achieve another need thus moving towards self-actualization where they become God-like. Abraham Maslow’s need hierarchy theory is the best example for it.
Learning and social-cognitive theory of personality suggests that one’s environment affects one’s learning and motivation throughout their life. It also proposes that people learn by imitating others thus get motivated to grow. Albert Bandura is a significant person in that.
Trait theory suggests that human beings have a trait with certain characteristics that would drive them to think and behave in a certain way.
For me Humanistic theory is more appealing as people try to fulfil whatever they want first and once that becomes stabilized, they move on to the next level. For example, when one is able to fulfil one’s need to buy a cycle, they will strive hard to achieve it, then they would strive hard to buy a motor bike, then they would move on to buy a car, thus human beings never stop from progressing. So, it’s really important for every human beings to satisfy their Physiological needs, safety needs, emotional needs, esteem needs and finally self-actualization needs. People who understand life will quickly move through the first three needs and try to move to the fourth and fifth level.
