Portillo Elementary school is a charter school that caters to ‘gifted’ students. On Monday morning, faculty and students came to school to hear the news that an instructor died in a vehicle accident over the weekend. Several instructors and students immediately became tearful upon hearing the news.
You are a school counselor. What steps might you take to address the event presented in the case scenario with the faculty and students?

As a school counselor, I would have a agenda in mind. The agenda will have a pattern. First would be expressing our sorrow for the loss and allowing people to do so for few minutes. This is better than bottling up the feelings. Next, I would slightly shift towards recollecting the good deeds of the instructor with the people. Then, slowly talking about the nature and uncertainty of life. I would also encourage people to talk to the family members of the deceased and be a support to them and to each other. This would be done by way of exercise, lasting for few minutes.
