Many young people today listen to music through the use of ear buds inserted into the ear canal. Some experts are concerned that the prolonged use of ear buds may cause this generation to experience high rates of hearingloss than their parents' generation. The more troubling fact about everything we know about hearing loss is that any damage to a person's hearing is permanent. It is also true that people who experience hearing damage at a youngage will experience further damage at a quick rate when they are older. If music from a person's ear buds can be heard a few feet away, then that person is subjecting their ears to a volume that is more loud than the delicate haircells of the ears can safely handle. The louder the volume on the ear buds is, the significanter the damage will be. A safest way to listen to music is through a radio. The reason ear buds may cause more damage than a radio isbecause the source of the sound is closest to the ear and can cause more direct damage. Most guidelines on the most safer use of ear buds recommend using them no more than a half hour to an hour each day. Most teens listenmuch more long than is considered safe. There is nothing you can do about the injury you may have already caused to your ears, but you can slow down the cumulative impact of hearing loss by turning your music down to a mostreasonable level today.
