PLEASE READ AND ANSWER COMPLETELY
Take a close look at how the theories of James-Lange and Schachter-Singer (the two-factor theory) are differentiated. Pay special attention to the role of physiological arousal, the Amygdala, and facial expressions in the experience of emotion.
Now here's a scenario: Suppose a woman is at a movie with a date and is asked in the middle of the movie to estimate her level of attraction to her date. According to the theories of James-Lange and Schachter and Singer (Two-factor theory), would her estimated level of attraction be different if they were at an extremely frightening movie than it would be if they were at a milder movie? For both theory, why or why not? (It should help you understand how these theories would predict different things if you carefully diagram the way the emotion would flow according to each.)
Explanation / Answer
According to James-Lange theory of emotion ,there should be physiological arousal or physical reaction to experience actual emotion. Thus ,this theory would predict that inorder to have a romantic emotion the woman should have a physiological arousal for the same. So, the woman during more frightening movie would be scared and her physical reaction would be trembling or screaming and would be experiencing emotions of fear than romance, than the at milder movie towards her date. Her level estimation for attraction towards her date would be lower than the milder movie.
According to Schachter and Singer , emotions are results of cognition and arousal. Our emotion depends upon our cognition and physiological arousal in a given context and as we cannot differentiate our emotions, we mislable them. So, according to this theory Woman at the horror movie due to her high physiological arousal would find her date more attractive than at the milder movie. Here she would mislable her fear emotions to romantic emotions due to the context and high physiological arousal.
