Question
Think about your definition of leadership, answer:
1. In a class, students share their own leadership definition in the first week of this leadership course. Why do you think they are asked to share their leadership definition? If you are a student in this course, is it reasonable to expect you to have a clear definition of leadership already? Do you think your definition will change as a result?
2. What trends will you see in these definitions? Would your definitions fit in? Or do you think there's good reason why your definition was an outlier
Explanation / Answer
the students enrolled in this course of leadership have been asked their theory and defination of leadership so as to get different perceptions about leadeing amongst the class . this will enable other students to get to think out of the lines and know about what thier peers expect from leaders. this will also enable the teaching facultry of the program to know different ideas that students hold about leadership.
it is unreasonable to expect a student to know a clear definition already as their are different theories and learning schools of leadership . it is not possible a for student to know an integrated definition at the beginning of the class.
the definition of any student will change at the end of the session as he/she will be exposed to other definitions and view points of the students which will enable them to understand the various aspects for becomins the right kind of leader.
one may find that there would be different trends in every definitions . for examples some definitions may arise from theories such as the great man theory which believes that leaders are born not made, the trait theory which suggests that people inherit traits such as extrovert, the contigency theory which says that no leadership style is best in all situations , the situational theory which supports that leaders choose the best course of action depending on the variables. another definition may arise from the behavioural theory which is similar to the theory of the great men. some students may speak from the modern theories such as the participative theory that holds the view of taking inputs into account along with the management and relationship theory which suggest supervision , organisation and connections formed between the followers and leader respectively.
my defination would fit in the latter theories of leadership hopwever it is not integrated that it would cover all aspects of how to be the best leaders. an integrated and all round defination would be formed only after the completion of the course and being exposed to all the ideas and requisites for being a leader.
