While twelve-step programs, such as Alcoholics Anonymous (the original twelve-step program on which all others are based) are technically not “therapy” they have helped literally millions over the years.
In 2016 the active membership world-wide in AA was over 2 million.

One of the most important common factor that contributies to the success of psychotherapy is the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and client.A positive therapeutic relationship is considered crucial for a successful outcome in any type of psychotherapy.A strong therapeutic alliance is considered a necessary condition for therapeutic change to occur. This relationship is based mutual trust,honesty,active listening and empathy of the therapist towards the client. Other common factors include,a healing setting which requires empathy,a rationale that explains the patients's symptoms and prescibes a procedure for resolving them and a procedure that requires active participation from both patient and therapist which would be helpful in resolving the problem and make psychotherapy a success. The patient and therapist will need to be in agreement about the goals of therapy as well as the tasks, which are two critical components of the therapeutic alliance.A strong alliance indicates that the patient accepts the treatment and is working together with the therapist, creating confidence in the patient that the treatment will be successful. Having empathy and understanding the patients perspective forms the basis for developing a healthy therapeutic relationship. Eclecticism in simple words means to use different paradigms or approaches towards studying a phenomenon. Multiple theories,styles,or ideas are used by researchers to study specific cases.The approach that takes formulas and techniques from different theories to use an integrated approach. For instance,in an eclectic form of therapy the therapist uses various forms of psychotherapy or an integrative form that adapts to the unique needs of each specific client, depending on the problem, the treatment goals, and the person’s expectations and motivation.An eclectic therapist customizes the therapeutic process for each individual by using whatever form of treatment, or combination of treatments, has been shown to be most effective for treating the particular problem. Somebody close to me has undergone a cognitive behaviourial for depression. She is a middle aged woman who was going through a phase of depression for quite a long time. CBT helped her overcome this problem along with medications as well. The therapist first talked to her generally just to gather information about her and her personality,her background. The most important fact was that she had all the family and friends support which motivated her to take therapy. It took around 10 sessions for her to overcome the problem.The sessions were all about trying to identify her current life situations that may be causing or contributing to her depression. she and her therapist identified the current patterns of thinking or distorted perceptions that lead to her depression. All her self defeating thoughts,overthinking were identified and the therapist suggested her to maintain a journal of her thoughts on a weekly basis. This would help her constructively reflect upon them and try to change it by controling her negative thoughts. The therapist suggested self talk and self evaluation to respond effectively. He told her to face her fears head on and try to deal with them first in a controled setting and then on her own. eventually,the therapy was a success eventhough she uses her medications just to control small amounts of normal anxiety issues.
