SANDERS SUPERMARKETS: WHAT HAPPENED TO CONTROL? Crit Inci Supermarkets operated 50 stores in the Midwest. Faced with significant from Wal-Mart, Kroger and Meijer, and in an attempt to regain mar had embarked on a program to do some renovation of 6. Three months ago, Sanchez was talking with his district manager, Norm Greenberg, about a major renovation in the grocery section of his store, but had heard no more about it. Fi- nally, Greenberg called Sanchez to tell him about a meeting at the corporate main ket share, the company its stores. Juan Sanchez was a store manager of Store #1 office that would be held to discuss his proposed renovation project. The meeting was attended by Sanchez, Greenberg, management from corpo- rate sales, the maintenance department, several district managers, and the cor porate operations manager. At the end of the meeting, they generally agreed t Store #16 would be reorganized (called "reset" in the language of the mainte nance department), including relocating various main aisles. The supervisor o the reset crew and the maintenance department were to submit final plans and a cost estimate a week later. During his next visit to Store #16, Greenberg told Sanchez about the plans for his store. He said that not everything had been finalized and apparently failed to on that part of the reset would include moving some of the aisles.

Ans1. A good supervisor need to have good leadership and excellent communication skills. The supervisor also needs good coordination skills and have a loyalty towards the organisation. They should also have the following additional skills:

The case indicates a breakdown of communication and coordination between the supervisors leading to creating in efficiencies at work. There is a need for a better level of understanding and improved channel of communication, coordination and humility to approach the problems. Also the passion to contribute to their work and give an extra effort to ensure smooth functioning of the work.

Ans 2. Sanchez is facing a dual conflict at work. One side he has a coordination and communication issue with his district Manager Norm Greenberg and from another side with his assistant store managers Jane Oliver and Wally Weathers.

Sanchez should resolve conflict with Norm Greenberg as follows:

Regarding resolving communication issues with his assistant store managers, he should meet his assistant managers and clearly delegate responsibility, assign clear schedules with targets.

He can also start an informal chat group where critical matters can be highlighted and resolved. He can create a system of a regular weekly meeting   address the day to day store related matters or critical job related matters. Informal meetings should also be encouraged to improve communication and increase efficiencies amongst assisatant store managers.

Ans 3. Regarding sudden appearance of carpenters and workers at the store he can discuss with their coordinator as to who has sent them. He can further request the project leader to reschedule their working to night hours when there are no customers. He can ensure work is smoothly carried outside the working hours of the store to avoid inconveniencing the customers. The customers should be his main focus and all his tasks should be focussed on maximising their satisfaction.
