After watching the video, write about how the Semco structure addresses the worker issues we have talked about in this class (such as pay, control, dignity, job security, and health and safety). Are there any issues that the Semco model does not address? What factors did you see in the organization that promote the companies success (both financially and in terms of promoting worker rights)? What factors do you think would have to be present for another organization to adopt Semco’s business model?

1)Semco is Brazilian company which has adopted the 'Lattice organizational' structure. This kind of structure lacks the traditional top-down hierarchy. Communication is between employee to employee, and there are no bosses.
Semco recognizes that people are more productive when they have a say in running the company.
Every 6 months , the worker is invited to decide his/her salary. The worker is informed about the salary that is paid for a similar work. But however the colleagues will decide if the worker really deserves the kind of salary that he has quoted.
Since there are no bosses, the onus of deciding the time of work, place of work etc is decided by the employees themselves. The employees are responsible for their own actions.
The employees are even given an opportunity to design and furnish their work space. A cartoon guide is provided for the employees which gives information on the financial performance of the company. Greater responsibility, trust placed by the management and various other internal process gives a sense of dignity among the workers. A
More over since the workers manage the company, the issue of job security takes a side step. The workers becomes more productive since he owns it.
The workers work in a relaxed atmosphere, thus having a positive impact on their health and fitness. The relaxed atmosphere is because there is no constant watch on the worker ,by the managerial staff of the organisation.
2) The factors that are present in the organization which promotes companies success are
a) A lattice structure, which gives more authority for the employees. This enables the front line workers to take decisions and timely interventions.
b) The workers are highly motivated.
c) The workers are responsible because the company works on a profit sharing basis among employees. This is a added pressure for the workers to perform.
d) A low employee turnout.
The issues that Semco model does not address are,
a) trust and transparency among the workers.
b) Bias and prejudice of employees among themselves.
c) Unfair assessment of peers by the employee.
d) Conflict resolution, in case of any differences that arise among workers.
e) Self discipline among the employees.
3) various factors needs to be taken into consideration, if an organization needs to adopt Semco's business model.
Semco follows a lattice organisational structure, and in this structure the management and senior managers should be willing to forego control over the employees. The employees in turn should be responsible enough to handle the new found freedom.
