Question

4. Determine whether or not each of the following is a Binomial random variable. If it is not a Binomial random variable, provide a short explanation a) You roll a die 20 times. Let X be the number of times that you roll "3" b) The SJSU football team will play 12 games next season. They have a 70% chance of winning each conference game and a 60% chance of winning each non- conference game. Let X be the number of games the SJSU football team wins next season Evelyn has a 75% chance of getting an A in each class she takes. Let X be the number of times Evelyn earns an A during four years at SJSU c)

Explanation / Answer

a)

There are only two possible outcomes: Get a 3 or not get a 3.

Each trial is independent from other.

The probability of success (getting a 3) remain same from trial to trial.

So it is a Binomial experiment.

b)

It is not a binomial experiment becuase number of possible outcomes are more than 2.

c)

There are only two possible outcomes: Get a A or not get a A

Each trial (each class) is independent from other.

The probability of success (getting a A) remain same from trial to trial.

So it is a Binomial experiment.
