Question

4. Data collected during a water balance study for a fish equally able to survive in sea water and fresh water are given in the table below. These values were found after the fish was placed one day in each of the two solutions of different salt concentration (condition A or B). (Group A) Condition AConditionB 3.0 Amount drunk (ml) Diffused through gills and skin (ml) (t, into animal) Metabolic water (ml) Water in feces and urine voided (ml) Body fluid concentration (mOsm/1) 20.0 -40 6.0 10) 300 21.0 6.0 30 300 I) Assuming these are all the components of water balance for the fish and giving explanations for your answer, answer the following questions: A 2) Under which condition (A or B) is the fish in water balance? 3.o 2) Under which condition (A or B) is the fish in water balance? (in) 3. 6) 9mu m L 6:-14 12 B: 20 +6: 26 n

Explanation / Answer

3) When fish is placed in fresh water, due to concentration gradient water will diffuse into the fish causing buildup of large amount of water inside the fish. Therefore, kidneys in these fishes excrete large amount of water and actively reabsorb salts. In the two conditions given here, water diffuse into the fish and fishes excrete large amount of water in condition A. Therefore, condition A is hypotonic and condition B is hypertonic.
