Question

Jefferson Community College is interested in determining if students prefer online courses or the traditional classroom setting. Suppose that they approach us and want us to find an answer to their question and support it statistically using a sample size of 100. 1. In detail, describe one way you could select a sample using convenience sampling. Explain the pros and cons of this sampling technique. (5 points) 2. In detail, describe one way you could select a sample using volunteer response. Explain the pros and cons of this sampling technique. (5 points) 3. In detail, describe one way you could select a sample using simple random sampling (SRS). Explain the pros and cons of this sampling technique. (5 points) 4. What would the margin of error be for each sample? (5 points)

Explanation / Answer

Convenience sampling:

A convenience sample is one of the main types of non-probability sampling methods.

If we want to obtain sample easily then we can use convenience sampling method.

For example opinion poll conducted in our society only.

In this type of sampling there is no probability involment in the selection of units from the population

so that it is called non probability sampling. In this sampling the biased in the result about population

are due to favouritism of the selectors. Margin of error of this sampling is very high.

Sample using volunteer response.

A voluntary sample is also the main types of non-probability sampling methods.

A voluntary sample is made up of people who self-select into the survey.

If we want to a particular type of result then we can choose those samples only

which are fulfill our requirement. For example, that a news show asks viewers to participate in an on-line poll.

This would be a voluntary sample. The sample is chosen by the viewers, not by the survey administrator.

In this sampling also have large biased because we ignore the rest of the population and focus only on

the selected voluntary. Thus the margin of error is very large.

Simple random sampling:

A simple random sample is a part or subset of a statistical population in which each member of the population

has an equal probability of being chosen. For example the names of 35 cities being chosen out of all the cities in a

particular country randomly with each city have an equal chance to include in the sample

In this sampling the personnal biased is not involved. So the margin of error is small. But If the population is

heterogeneous then the variance of the estimated population parameters are very large.
