Question
Suppose that you are asked to conduct a study to determine whether attending lectures has an effect on student performance in ECON300 [5pts] If you could conduct any experiment you want, what would you do? Be specific. Explain why your proposed experiment may or may not be practical and/or ethical in reality a. b. [5pts] More realistically, suppose you can collect observational data based on everyone enrolled in the course. You obtain data on the percentage of lectures attended, and the final course mark in numeric form. Would you expect a positive or a negative correlation between these two variables? [5pts] Suppose the data shows that the variables are positively correlated. Is this proof that attending lectures causes students to perform better? Explain why or why not. c.Explanation / Answer
a) we can perform an independent 2 sample t test to check whether attending lectures affect scores of ECON300
1 group could be say 30 students who attended lectures and their scores
2 group could be 30 different students who did not attend lectures.
Then compares the average econ300 scores for these 2 groups
b)
Percentage of lectures attended and numeric scores must be positively correlated , as one would expect that attending lectures would add to students knowledge and increase the avergae score. hence we woul expect to see a positive correlation
c)
Correlation doesnt explain the causal relationship. It only tells that the 2 variables increase/decrease together or inversely
Hence getting a postive correlation doesnt necessarily mean that attending lecutes CAUSES the students to perform better. You might still see an increased avergae score but it is not CAUSED due to positve correlation between the 2 variables
