Question
How can I answer this question using Excel? I'm not sure what formula and how to input the formula into Excel.
Twelve of the top 20 finishers in the 2009 PGA Championship at Hazeltine Golf Course in Chaska, Minnesota, used a Titleist golf ball. Suppose these results are representative of the probability that a randomly selected PGA Tour player uses a Titleist brand ball. For a sample of 15 PGA Tour players, make the following calculations.
A. Compute the probability that exactly 10 of the 15 PGA Tour players use a Titeist brand golf ball.
B. Compute the probability that more than 10 of the 15 PGA Tour players use a Titeist brand golf ball.
C. For a sample of 15 PGA Tour players, compute the expected number of players who use a Titleist brand golf ball.
D. For a sample of 15 PGA Tour players, compute the variance and standard deviation of the number of players who use a Titleist brand golf ball.
Explanation / Answer
here as sampling is done without replacement ; this is hypergeometric distribution
you can use excel hypgeom.dist function function is given in bold letter; copy and paste in your spreadsheet
and revert for any clarification
a) probability that exactly 10 of the 15 PGA Tour players use a Titeist brand golf ball =P( selecting 10 out of 12 )
=HYPGEOM.DIST(10,12,15,20,FALSE) =0.2384
b) probability that more than 10 of the 15 PGA Tour players use a Titeist brand golf ball =P(X>10)
=1-P(X<=10)=1-HYPGEOM.DIST(10,12,15,20,true) =0.0578
c)expected number of players who use a Titleist brand golf ball =nK/N =15*12/20=9
d) variance =nk/N(1-k/N)*((N-n)/(N-1)) =(15*12/20)*(1-12/20)*(5/19)=0.9474
e) std deviation =(variance)1/2 =0.9733
