If the pair successfully raises a chick in a cycle, its chance of successfully raising a chick in the next two-year cycle is 0.8. On the other hand, if the pair fails to raise a chick in a cycle, the eagles chance of raising a chick in the next cycle is 0.6.What is the probability that the Harpy parents have raised three chicks at the end of three successive cycles? 06.Suppose now that events A. Explanation / Answer

Let the three successive cycles in which the eagles have successfully raised a chick each be named 1,2,3.

The probability of raising a Chick successfully in cycle 1 is dependent on the event whether the parents raised a chick successfully in cycle 0.

If they raised a chick successfully in cycle 0, then the probability of raising a Chick successfully in each of the cycles 1,2 and 3 is given as 0.8 x 0.8 x 0.8.

If the parents failed to successfully raise a chick in cycle 0, then the probability of raising a Chick successfully in each of the cycles 1,2 and 3 is given as 0.6 x 0.8 x 0.8.

So the total probability of raising a Chick successfully in each of the cycles 1,2 & 3 = 0.8 x 0.8 x 0.8 + 0.6 x 0.8 x 0.8 = 0.896
