6.) In Sheet 2: Use the Excel directions below to create a scatterplot for the Temperature in Fahrenheit and the number of cricket chirps per sec Temp: 88.6 71.6 93.3 84.3 80.6 75.2 69.7 82 69.4 83.3 79.6 82.6 80.6 Chirps: 20 16 19.8 18.4 17.1 15.5 14.7 17.1 15.4 16.2 15 17.2 16

a) Find the Best Fit Line using Excel. State what the slope means with respect to the problem.

b) Find the Coefficient of Determination using Excel. Write what this means.

c) Find Se (=steyx(highlight y’s, highlight x’s))

Explanation / Answer

a) Chirping varies depended on temperature,so chirping is the dependent variable( denoted by y )and temperature is the independent variable(denoted by x).

Using excel, the estimated regression equation is y=0.3852+0.205x

The slope of the best fit line (b1) is 0.205 which is positive ,implying that as the temperature increases, the number of cricket chirps per second increases.

b)Using excel, the value of the coefficient of determination is r2=0.7236

When we express the coefficient of determination as a percentage,r2 can be interpreted as the percentage of the total sum of squares that can be explained by using the estimated regression equation. Here,we can conclude that 72.36% of the total sum of squares can be explained using the estimated regression equation y=0.3852+0.205x to predict the number of cricket chirps per sec.In other words,72.36% of the variability in chirps can be explained by the linear relationship between the temperature and chirps.

c)Se=0.93884
