Question
Resistors are one of the many elementary components in electric circuits. Name others and note if they are Ohmic or not and why. What may they be used for? (name more for more credit). RC Circuits (depends on how many examples you can provide):
Capacitor and resistor circuits discharge at a rate proportional to the product of the capacitance and resistance. Many phenomena in physics and other fields display this same trend. The rate of chage of some property depends linearly on the value of the property. This leads to exponential decays. Can you name other phenomena with this behavior? They need not be in physics. List the source/reference where you got it from.
Explanation / Answer
Capacitor and inductor are other elementary componets in electric circuits except resistor.
In Ohmic component the voltage-current graph follow a straight line. Capacitor and inductor are not ohmic since the relationship btw voltage and current in these two devices are non-linear.
There are many properties in Physics whose rate of change of property depends linearly on the value of the property. For examples
1. Linear expansion of rod- rate of change of length with per unit change in temperature dL/dT is proportion to length.
2. Volume expansion of gas- rate of change of volume with per unit change in temperature is proportional to volume.
3. Disintegration rate of radionuclei is proportional to number of nuclei present in sample.
