Question

A speaker (to generate sound waves) and 2 detectors are placed in liquid such that they form a straight line. The speaker emits a sound pulse that reaches the first detector at tmillsecond and the second detector at t2 1.33 milliseconds. If the distance between the 2 detectors is 0.5 meters, calculate the speed of sound in the liquid. (Show your work) 3. 4. For the speed of sound experiment that you are about to perform, you wil be asked to gather position and time data. Determine which of these variables wl be the independent and which will be the dependent.

Explanation / Answer

3. The time taken by the sound to reach to the second detector after being detected at the first>

t2 - t1 = 0.33 * 10-3 s.

distance between the detectors = 0.5m

speed = dist./time

= 0.5/0.33 * 10-3

speed of sound in the medium = 1.515 * 103 m/s

4. Time taken by the sound wave to reach the detectors depends on the position of the detectors, hence time is dependent on position. Position can be determined by us, hence it is independent.
