You want to design an experiment to determine if an online homework system for a particular course is effective. Answer the following questions.
1. who is the population?
2. What are the units?
3. What is/are the treatment(s)?
4. What are the outcomes?
5. If there are 5 sections of this course for a total of 120 students, describe 3 methods for collecting samples.
6. How would an experiment differ if every student taking the course completed homework in the online system compared to 3 sections completing homework online and the other 2 in a traditional pencil/paper method?
7. Assume that the study is to start 6 weeks into the semester (those students using the online homework have had 6 weeks to evaluate and practice).
A. What data would you want to collect?
B. If you had the students fill out a survey/questionnaire, what questions might you ask?
Explanation / Answer
1) Population - It is a complete set of persons that possess some common characteristic that is of interest. So here population is all the students who are in the same course .
2) Units - It is the representation of population , which is subset of population selected. Here the units are students who to online homework and who donot do online homework . Thus as these students are subset of population they form units.
3) Treatment - It is the experiment carried out to test the hypothesis . So as we want to test online homewok is effective for particular course thus experiment will be to check the difference between online homework method and traditional homework method and result of this experiment will show which method of homework is effective.
4) Outcomes - This is the result of treatment . So when we conduct the treatment the rejection or acceptance of the hypothesis will give us outcome of the conducted treatment.
5) 3 methods to collect sample - Simple random sampling , Stratified random sampling , Cluster random sampling
Simple random sampling - It is a type of probability sampling that ensures each element of population has an equal chance of being chosen. Here we identify population and enumerate the list of all the elements of population. Slips of paper representing each element in population could be placed in bowl and drawing out as many required slips of paper as the desired size of sample. So we can choose number of students required for sample by above methods. But we don't know that these sample will come from each course section or not. This is disadvantage.
Stratified random sampling - Here the population is divided into subgroups according to some variables of importance. After the population is divided into groups a simple random sample is taken from each groups.
Cluster random sampling - Here the groups or clusters become sampling units. First cluster to be sampled could be obtained by drawing a simple random sampling or stratified random sampling . Then second cluster would be sampled and so on.
So students can be selected from 5 sections by any of the above method.
6) We can use unpaired t test test if there is difference in online method and traditional method . Unpaired t test is used as 3 sections of onine and 2 sections of traditional method.
7) A) - Data should be collected of both methods Online and Traditional method sample . So students of both the methods should be considered from entire population.
