Problem 4.10 Explain the differences in the following two machine recovery schemes. Comment on their imple- mentation requirements, advantages and shortcomings, and application potential. a. Recovery of a physical machine failure by another physical machine b. Recovery of a VM failure by another VM

Explanation / Answer

Recovery from a physical machine is much slower as well as lacks many advantages that a recovery from a VM has. Lets dwell into these short comings:-

1. Physical recovery is much more time taking because it requires a physical inspection of the faulty device . Take the example of a faulty harddisk, the hassels you have to go through to retrieve data from a corrupt hard disk.

2. Virtualization implemented through VM makes recovery way simpler . Thanks to the hardware independence, once a VM inside your virtual infrastructure fails, you can just run your backed up VMs on any server because the guest OSs are no longer tied up to particular hardware.

3. VMware High Availability or VMHA is an option that allows you to restore VMs from a failed server to another so that you’ll get it back running in no time.

As far as application potential goes the advantages are endless. apart from the above mentioned advantages you have snapshots.A snapshot enables the virtual machine's state at the time of the snapshot to be restored later, effectively undoing any changes that occurred afterwards. This is quite useful as a backup technique such as while performing a risky operation.

The snapshots described above can be moved to another host machine with its own hypervisor. This is called as migration.
