Question

A study of undergraduate computer science students examined changes in major after the first year. The study examined the fates of 256 students who enrolled as first-year students in the same fall semester. The students were classified according to gender and their declared major at the beginning of the second year. The students studied were enrolled at a large Midwestern university several years ago. Discuss how you would conduct a similar study at a college or university of your choice today. Include a description of all variables that you would collect for your study.

Explanation / Answer

At present if a similar study needs to be conducted :

Say we are talking about college xyz (you may name it as you want)

We select say 200 students at random from various majors and trace out which subject did they have in first year

we can take a not of the details in the simplest manner , by just mentioning a simple question: Whether major changes from first year or not ? the answer could be "yes ? no"

this closed ended question makes the study much simpler

The proportion of major changed in present sample can be then compared with the proportion of changes made in the previous data.
