Question
A large group of smokers contains 290 men and 110 women. You wish to choose a sample of 60 people from this group that will contain an equal number of men and women, but want to choose the men and the women in a random fashion. Is this a simple random sample? Demonstrate to me why or why not, and if appropriate what type of sample it is. Explain clearly how you would assign numerical labels to the people in the groups to achieve this goal. You wish to take this group of 60 people and randomly assign them to groups for a clinical trial to test whether treatments with gum containing nicotine, or a nicotine skin patch, or the gum and patch in combination, will assist them in stopping to smoking. Outline the design, or give a flow chart of this randomized experiment that will accomplish this.Explanation / Answer
1. It is stratified random sampling. Since we need to make sure that 30 men & 30 women have to be there in the sample so we have to stratify men and women separately.
2. We will stratify men and women separately. We will also assign the numbers in random order to the groups of men and women separately irrespective of any other feature.
3. Since have 2 groups of men and women, this will act as blocks for us for ANOVA design. We will divide these each group of 30 into 3 i.e. 10 each. Now, these each group of 10 will be given 3 types of treatments:
1) No treatment
2) Gum coating
3) Skin patch
Numbers will be divided as follows:
Men Women No treatment 10 10 Gum 10 10 Skin patch 10 10Related Questions
