Question
A large electroscope is made with "leaves" that are 78-cm-long wires with tiny 24-g spheres at the ends. When charged, nearly all the charge resides on the spheres.
If the wires each make a 26 ? angle with the vertical (see the figureabove), what total charge Q must have been applied to the electroscope? Ignore the mass of the wires.
(Please show your steps, thanks!)
Explanation / Answer
Distance between the charges = 2*78*sin 26 = 68.38 cm
F = kq1q1/r^2 = k*(Q/2)^2/r^2
tan 26 = F/mg
Q = 4.88 *10^-6 C
