Question

You ound a carton o 2% pasteurized milkin the refrigerator that expired yesterday. You want to know if you should drink itso make serial dilutions o the sample. The dilutions you make are 10' 2 104 & 106. You plate 1.0 ml of each diluted sample & make 3 replicates of each. After the suspension has soaked in, you invert the plates & incubate @37C for 48 hours. Your results are listed in the toble below 0 TMTC TMTC MTC 243 388 182 .4 Decide which of the following statemtents are true statements. These results do not make sense because there should be 10x more colonies on 102 plates compared to the 102 plates. These results do not make sense because there should be 100x more colonies on 102 plates compared to the 104 plates. These results do not make sense because there should be 1000x more colonies on 10-2 plates compared to the 104 plates. These results do not make sense because there should be more colonies on the 104 plates compared to the 102 plates. These results do make sense because there should be 10x more colonies on 102 plates compared to the 10-4 plates. These results do make sense because there should be 100x more colonies on 102 plates compared to the 104 plates. These results do make sense because there should be 1000x more colonies on 10-2 plates compared to the 104 plates. These results do make sense because there should be less colonies on 10-2 plates compared to the 104 plates. These results make sense because the final calculations for both dilutions are relatively different in value. This makes sense because we had two samples & therefore should have 2 concentrations These results do not make sense because the final calculations for both dilutions are relatively different in value. This does not make sense because we only had one sample.

Explanation / Answer

Ans. We do serial dilutions so that our counting becomes easy.Serial dilution hold the fact that if we are diluting the sample 100 times then technically we should get 100 times less bacterial count in the next dilution. For eg. if there are 3000 cells in 10-2   dilution then there should be 30 cells in 10 -4 dilutions.

SO according to this theory the above results do not make sense because if we see 10 -2 and 10 -4 there is no 100x factor that can be seen so this is correct option from abov all.
