Question

You over hear two students discussing the topic of Doppler shift d Student 1: "Sin red Betelgeuse is a red star, it must be going away from us, and since Rigel is a blue star it must be coming toward us." US. n Student 2 1 dsagre, the color of the star doesnt tlyoul ffrs mioving You have to look at the shit in the wavelengths of the lines in the star's absorption spectrurm, and if they're stretched out that means the star is moving toward you Tell whether you agree or disagree with each student, and briefly explain your reasoning

Explanation / Answer

I partially agree with student 2. Because doppler shift is the change of frequency and wavelength of light due to relative motion between the observer and the source. So we do not observe the color of an object or star. In visible spectrum when an object is moving far from us, wavelengths get longer and we get red shift. On the other hand blue shift is observed when an object is moving towards us as the wavelength gets shorter.

Therefore the statement given by the student 2 is partially right, but the last sentence is wrong i.e. the absorption spectrum stretched out means the star is moving towards us.

The statement of student 1 is totally wrong.
